Discretionary Effort

Discretionary Effort is something I guess I have always been aware of but until recently not given it that name, I've always though of it as going the extra mile. We all know staff who will happily go the extra mile and also those who stick to their job description religiously. Why do these two types of staff exist and how to we build discretionary effort. The diagram below identifies very clearly how this might be done and how this could then lead to greater success. I guess it would be easy to align these two types of staff on the graph below too. I know where i would like people to be.

Jacobs Equation- Change Management

I was introduced to this via our PIXL Associate David Evans and think its is a brilliant way of encapsulating the prerequisites to bring about a desired change. The simplistic equation makes you really address the why, the how and the what. Another piece of PIXL wisdom is that sense of always seeking to evolve, improve and not remaining static at the risk of becoming stagnant, eloquently expressed in the quote below by Marshall Goldsmith.

Gemba - The Importance of being in touch

I loved this idea when I 1st saw it and it highlighted the significance of leaders keeping in touch. It's so easy to not get out there and see what's happening on the ground but equally as dangerous.
